For example, would I be denied potential employment because of bankruptcy filed in the US? Would it show up in background checks in the UK or anything else? I know the US and UK have different banking systems but they do have a Social Security agreement so citizens living in the other country are not taxed doubly. I just don't want my US credit history or report showing up anywhere in the UK. I would appreciate any help or expertise on this matter. For the person who responded "If there is any justice it will" ...well, the US did not give me any justice because a person stole my SSN and identity and racked up debt which I could not afford to pay back. Creditors did not want to deal with it and further abuse on my SSN further followed. I could not get my SSN changed and was left with no option but to file for bankruptcy. I came from Canada - good credit/bad credit you can't bring that to the states. Talk to you trustee.

I rarely use personal anecdotes when answering these questions...but I have one for you. I don't think it will hurt you. I had a friend that lived in Detroit from Frankfurt, Germany. Germany has similar SSN agreements in place to my knowledge even if there relationship isn't the same with the US as the "special" relationship between the UK and US is. This friend drove his car (which had a loan) to the airport and left for Germany never to come back. He had a pile of debt and never even filed for bankruptcy, which is worse than what you are doing. As far as I know it never affected him in Germany, and he is doing quite well. He cannot visit the US for obvious reasons until the statute of limitations expires, as what he did was quite illegal. I am positive that the impact on his credit was much worse than what yours would be, and it apparently did not have an effect. I hope this helps. Good luck!

The credit systems in the UK and USA are very different. The credit you've earned or any bad credit will not follow you. If you've been bankrupt or have perfect credit you will still start a no credit rating until you get your first credit card or loan. Unless you are applying for a job that requires security clearance, hospital, government work, bank, etc then you will rarely get a background check. If the application does state that you have to declare bankruptcy then it is a legal requirement to do so.
