"Cash is king," they say, but credit card has become a culture, a way of life. In the present and indeed the future, for a business to continue to grow and remain profitable, especially if it sells goods and or services it must be ready to accept this ubiquitous means of payment, plastic cards. Whether it's a retail store where customers come in to make a purchase or an online site or a remote area where you take your service or product to the customer, you would still need to be able to accept card payments. The first step to putting your business in position to be able to accept credit cards is to open a merchant account with a card processing firm.

Once you decide to accept cards in your business you should go ahead and open an account with a credit card processing company. Usually they will provide your business with payment gateway terminals depending on the type of business you do.

The gateway terminal that they might provide you includes the virtual terminal for online stores and or the P.O.S terminal (point of sale terminal) for the brick and mortar store and wireless credit card machines.

The virtual terminal is your main gateway to ecommerce. It includes a shopping cart through which you can process payment from customers who make purchases on your website. Once they are ready to check out they are asked to complete a form which will include filling out there name, phone number, card information, billing and shipping address. Once they submit the information there card is verified and the payment processed within a few second and the transaction is completed. The advantage of the virtual terminal is that it is fast and easy to use. It saves time for both the customer and the retailer.

For the business that accepts cards it has the added advantage of increasing the number of customers they can reach. The business never goes to sleep. It is open 24 hours and people from all over the world with different time zones can come and shop at their convenience.

The point of sale terminal (P.O.S) involves the credit card processing company providing you a credit card machine which you use to process your customer's information and collect payment from them. These machines are portable and can be seen sitting on the register at cashier stalls in retail stores. They are quick and easy to use and process the credit card information once the credit card is swiped on the credit card machine.

Another point of sale terminal that involves a card machine is the wireless credit card machine. Again these are machines that process card payments. They do not sit at a retail store but are taken by the retailer to the customer. Literally they bring the business to the consumer. Businesses that use wireless terminals include food delivery businesses, courier services and even brick and mortar businesses when they go for trade fairs and promotions.
