Okay so i have been doing a lot of research. I am confused because I am 24 years old, and that is the beginning of one category of work credit qualifications. before the age of 18 i earned about 5 work credits ( around 5,000) from 18- 22 : i earned about 7 or so credits ( all rough calculations, you can only earn 4 a year) I left my last job at the age of 22, 10 months after i turned 22, in that time i earned around 7500, which is well over the 4,480 need to earn the max of 4 credits per year the disease usually surfaces around age 20 when the beginning of my symptoms originally surfaced, but never received treatment. OR i became disabled at 23, when i became pregnant and the symptoms of endocrine disease surfaced, and began receiving treatment for the symptoms like high blood pressure, and colo-rectal problems which resulted in 4 surgeries. after doing a lot of my own research i was able to find the name of the very rare disease i have. the official diagnosis is soon to come SO with all that info these are the questions should i apply now, before an official diagnosis so i may receive benefits closer to the time my husband is honorably discharged from the army? as for the whole work credits thing... i just don't know what to think about that. i used the calculator and it said i was not eligible but that just doesn't seem right to me, or fair... not that i expect it to be fair. once i receive treatment for this disease i will be very ill for a minimum of a year, at which time my husband will be out of the service and looking for a new job or going to college. i will most likely have a preexisting condition issue with finding insurance so i really need the ssdi, as opposed to ssi. any help, insight, links, anything is greatly appreciated. i would think you are in the 24-31 age group BEFORE 24 means 23 or younger they want your credits between age 21-24 this disability might have appeared at age 23--but that may be different than the time you actually were unable to work.. you may be able to base your application date as the disability starting at age 23--if you were in fact unable to work at that time.....in the case you go by the Under 24 rules depending on your exact age years +months--it may be close to qualify for the 24-31 category. APPLY ASAP to preserve your rights...it takes a while to gather info--and if the doc just stalls until he has the diagnosis--they won't process the application.. you get benefits from date of application--so if you wait to apply--you may lose out you are actually better off with SSI--you get medicaid right away with SSDi, you don't medicare until 2.5 years after the disability started.. but with either you get no benefits until you are approved which can take years... do you know your benefit amount...if its less than 674---they will supplement with SSI (and medicaid) as long as your family income and resources are low (your husbands income will probably make you ineligible for SSI right now) with insurance--COBRA may still cover you if you are continuing an employer health plan--not sure how it works with military benefits also SSDI doesn't start until the 6th month of disability... the idea behind work credits is that if you didn't need income before you were disabled, you shouldn't need income now an issue with SSI is that there are no dependent benefits--but there are with SSDI... you maybe able to get a benefit for your husband (if he is unemployed) and your child...although you would be much better off if your husband can get a job--its usually a lot more money ALSO--you can't have more than $ 2000/$ 3000 in resources--which can include a second family car, money, anything that can be converted to cash for SSI.. its 2000 for individual, 3000 for couple..but i don't know if the 3000 only refers to both partners getting SSI AND: if its cushings--it will be a hard fight to get benefits during the surgery period--and very doubtful they will continue once you have recovered from the surgeries....

MacKennedy, absolutely apply now. The process can take a long time, it took me almost three years. You will more than likely be denied with your initial application, this is just the way the system works, so make sure that your appeal or request for reconsideration is made within the time limits they give you. It is not a bad idea to contact an attorney, they will not be paid until you receive your back pay. The first six months you are not working do not count, but once approved you will receive pay dating back to the date of your initial application, minus six months. Don't worry about whether or not you qualify based on credits. There are two types of disability through Social Security, and if you are truly disabled you will qualify for one of them, one is based on work credits, and the other is based on income. Good luck with everything, and really consider an attorney, and remember that it is going to be a lengthy process, perseverance is key. Good luck!!! Hope the info helps.

To see if you qualify for SSDI, go to a social security office and apply in person. What does your husband have to do with any of this? You can apply any time of your life, the amount of the benefit depends on your contributions to Social Security. It has to be decided by Social Security assessments whether you qualify as being permanently disabled and how much your benefit might be.
