Question by money mike: American Express, credit card? I'm thinking of applying for either a Blue or Blue Cash from American Express. I don't exactly know my cfedit score but it should be good because I never miss a payment, and I've gotten offers from AE. My question is how does the points you get from these cards really work, do you have to spend on certain places to qualify for points or what. I use my current credit card for gas(Tesoro, Shell), online purcahases (CD Universe), Food, ect. can someone please explain how the points work, and which card is more suitable for me the blue or blue cash if I got approved. thank you. Best answer for American Express, credit card?:

I would check your credit before you apply. People fall into the trap of thinking just because they make payments on time means they have good credit. There is more that goes into your credit score than just your payment history. They can mail out credit card applications to anyone and tell them they are pre-approved. You need a really high credit score to qualify for AMEX as they are the stingiest when it comes to issuing cards. If you think you qualify you will earn points on any purchase you make on your AMEX card. It won't matter where you use it.

Alrighty, first things first - BOTH CARDS HAVE NO ANNUAL FEE. The Blue from AmEx can be enrolled into the Membership Rewards program (see www.membershiprewards.com for the items that can be redeemed). You can earn 1 point for virtually every dollar spent with no additional cost. The points have no expiration (just maintain a good payment history so as not to lose the points for the month) & has no limit. They can be redeemed for merchandise (from books to jewelry to clothes and even electronics), airline, hotel, car rental, dining, and even charity rewards. The number of points that you need to start redeeming would vary from one item to the other (can be as low as 500 up to a million or more). The points continuously accumulate until you redeem them. The Blue Cash Rebate Card from AmEx earn upto 5% cash back. Earn more on everyday purchases (stand-alone gas, grocery, drugstore purchases - 5% for yearly spend of more than US$ 6500.01 - it's 1% for yearly spend of less than US$ 6500). Everywhere else transactions also earn a rebate - 0.5% for up to US$ 6500 spend and 1.5% if you spend more than that - and that would include dining out). The rebate is awarded once a year, it comes in a form of a credit on your statement (thus, helping you pay the balance down). So, points VS cash back? That is the question. Choose the best one that you think will suit you. Both of these require you to spend more for you to earn more, of course. But AmEx would also regularly send promotions where you can either double, or even triple what you can earn. I would personally go for points myself because it's more flexible. I can use the points to buy a gift card - and if I have a lot, maybe an MP3 player. It would take a lot of time though for you to accumulate points fast so signing up for the double/triple points promotions would help. Cash back can be a bit faster, yes - but I would always have to be on the lookout for a stand-alone store/gas station/drugstore. BTW, you can call AmEx's customer service department, and ask them to find out for you if whether or not a store/gas station/drugstore right across the street will qualify as everyday or non-everyday location. I truly hope this helps you with your decision. You can also check out the cards and their benefits at www.americanexpress.com.

American Express has tightened up quite a bit, so definitely go to myfico.com and run your Experian report to get your current FICO score. As long as you have no negatives within the last two years or so, you SHOULD be able to get either a Blue or Delta Skymiles with scores in the low to mid-600s. Also, if you have a Costco in your area, apply for their card..you get 3% back on gasoline purchases.
