Question by Shannon!: Can I take classes at a community college and transfer to a 4-year school to get a Bachelor's&go 2 med school? This is my first semester at junior college near where I live. I am a Chemistry major and I would like to transfer to Miami University (in Ohio, not Florida) to get my Bachelor's of Science and go on to medical school. I know that I can take my core classes at a community college, but does it matter how many you take? I've gone through all of the classes that I'll need to take to graduate from this community college and I'll have 78 semester hours by Fall of 2011 if I stay at my current pacing of about 14 or more credits a semester. I also know that you need 128 semester hours to graduate with a Bachelor's degree from Miami University which means I will have to take 50 semester hours there. (I also hope to get a research job by the fall semester after I've taken a few biology and chemistry courses.) Will me taking so many credit hours at a community college hurt my chances of getting accepted at a 4-year school and medical school? I got accepted into 4-year institutions when I graduated high school in June, but I couldn't afford to go to any of them. I just don't want my chances reduced or my application looked down upon because of where I started especially when my courses and the ones I want to take are not easy A's and that I'm doing it in a relatively short period of time. No, you need to get as many of the science (other than the intro ones) at the university level. Also, you are in danger of not having all those credits transfer (there is a limit-essentially 2 years only transfer). Med school wants to see higher level university caliber pre-med pre-reqs, not a bunch of CC ones. Since you are essentially done with the degree AA at the community college, it is time to get out & move up.
